Blue Mountains Historical Society

Mission

The mission of the “Blue Mountains Historical Society” (BMHS) is to identify, promote, and assist in the preservation of unique cultural, historical, natural and manmade features within and related to The Town of the Blue Mountains, Ontario Canada.

Vision

 The past can plays a valuable role in shaping the future story and pride of community that will influence the ongoing livability and hospitality of the town and its ability to attract visitors and future residents. 

Values

  • Membership and participation in the activities of BMHS will be inclusive and open to any person or organization who supports the mission and ideals of the society.
  • In pursuit of it goals the Society will be an apolitical organization and consistently seek a consensus of views within our membership, the community and working partnerships with other established organizations in the region that are aligned.

Objectives

  • BMHS will strive to be the pre-eminent learning organization for the general heritage of our community as per the guidelines of the Ontario Heritage Society.
  • We will focus our future exploration and development in the following general categories:

  1. Indigenous
  2. Agriculture / Industrial
  3. Ski Industry
  4. Settler
  5. Geological / Nature
  6. Environmental

Scope

 

  1. Promote an awareness of local history through education, public meetings, tours, demonstrations and to encourage school age children to learn and appreciate the rich history of our community.
  2. Promote the identification and preservation of historically, architecturally and archaeologically valuable sites, structures and areas.
  3. Encourage historical research and the preservation of materials and memorabilia relating to the heritage of the region. Produce and promote the publishing of research, presentations and materials relating to the community.
  4. Support, promote, and assist in providing and maintaining historical museums, plaques, cairns and other monuments to our historical past.
  5. Partner with local businesses, organizations and museums to support and promote beneficial initiatives related to The Blue Mountains.
  6. BMHS will finance its activities through memberships, donations and grants generated both within and external to the community.
  7. BMHS will be governed by an executive committee and directors elected by members of BMHS at the Annual General Meeting and its approved by-laws.
